In this passage, we will cover some of the details that you should consider when choosing the right beginner banjo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is my budget?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As with any purchase, budget will be an important factor to consider when making your decision. The banjo has one of the most recognizable voices in all of music history and complements the sound of many different genres. A few of these genres are Bluegrass, Old-Time, Newgrass, Traditional Irish, Americana, Ragtime, Folk, Outlaw Country, Modern Country, and Jazz. Even the Classic Rock band, Guns\u2019N\u2019Roses, has utilized it in some of their music. The genre you like the most may and should affect your decision when choosing your first banjo. It\u2019s important to take this into consideration when making your purchase. Going a bit deeper into this subject, you will find that different genres often use different styles of banjo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>I&#8217;ve chosen my genre. Now what?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you have chosen your genre or genres, it may still be difficult to identify which style of banjo is right for you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bluegrass, Newgrass, Country<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have chosen <strong>Bluegrass, Newgrass<\/strong>, or <strong>Country<\/strong>, you may want to consider a 5 string banjo with a resonator. The most unmistakable playing style associated with the banjo is \u201cScruggs Style\u201d, a.k.a. \u201cThree-Finger Picking\u201d. This style is usually played on resonator banjos with a bluegrass-style pot assembly and neck. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/goldtonemusicgroup.com\/goldtone\/instruments\/ac-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AC-5: Acoustic Composite Banjo<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/goldtonemusicgroup.com\/goldtone\/instruments\/cc-100r\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CC-100R: Cripple Creek Resonator Banjo<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/goldtonemusicgroup.com\/goldtone\/instruments\/cc-bg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CC-BG: Cripple Creek Banjo Bluegrass Starter Pack<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Old-Time, Folk, Americana<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if you choose <strong>Old-Time<\/strong>, <strong>Folk<\/strong>, or <strong>Americana<\/strong> you might consider an openback banjo with no resonator. Old-Time is typically played using the \u201cClawhammer\u201d technique and sometimes the \u201cTwo Finger Thumb Lead\u201d technique. Open-back banjos are a slightly more diverse instrument. Usually, open-back banjos can come with a variety of tone rings, (rolled brass, White Ladye, tube-a-phone, Dobson etc.). They also come in different rim diameters \u2013 11\u201d and 12\u201d being the most common. We will delve into the different varieties of open back banjo in another article. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/goldtonemusicgroup.com\/goldtone\/instruments\/ac-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AC-1: Acoustic Composite Banjo<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/goldtonemusicgroup.com\/goldtone\/instruments\/cc-50\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CC-50: Cripple Creek Banjo<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/goldtonemusicgroup.com\/goldtone\/instruments\/cc-ot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CC-OT: Cripple Creek Banjo Clawhammer Package<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Traditional Irish Music<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another genre that the banjo is prevalent in is <strong>Traditional Irish<\/strong> music. Trad Irish musicians almost exclusively use Irish Tenor banjos which have 4 strings instead of 5. Tenor banjos used for Trad Irish are usually tuned like a Mandolin or Fiddle. However, alternate tunings do exist for this genre. It is important to note that Irish Tenor banjos usually use a heavier gauge string to allow for the tunings used in Trad Irish music. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/goldtonemusicgroup.com\/goldtone\/instruments\/ac-4-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AC-4 IT: Acoustic Composite Irish Tenor Banjo<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/goldtonemusicgroup.com\/goldtone\/instruments\/cc-irish-tenor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CC-Irish Tenor: Cripple Creek Irish Tenor Banjo<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ragtime, Jazz<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ragtime<\/strong> and <strong>Jazz <\/strong>musicians also utilize the <a href=\"https:\/\/goldtonemusicgroup.com\/goldtone\/instruments\/cc-tenor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tenor Banjo<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/goldtonemusicgroup.com\/goldtone\/instruments\/cc-plectrum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Plectrum Banjo<\/a>. Tenor Banjos have a shorter neck than a Plectrum but both instruments have 4 strings. The tunings and string gauges differ from the Irish Tenor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/goldtonemusicgroup.com\/goldtone\/instruments\/ac-4\">AC-4: Acoustic Composite Tenor Banjo<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/goldtonemusicgroup.com\/goldtone\/instruments\/cc-plectrum\">CC-Plectrum: Cripple Creek Plectrum Banjo<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/goldtonemusicgroup.com\/goldtone\/instruments\/cc-tenor\">CC-Tenor: Cripple Creek Tenor Banjo<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Country, Rock<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some musicians who play <strong>Country<\/strong> and even <strong>Rock <\/strong>use electric banjos. Electric banjos are not limited to these genres. They serve as a valuable tool to bring diversity into many genres of music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/goldtonemusicgroup.com\/goldtone\/instruments\/eb-5\">EB-5: Electric Banjo<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/goldtonemusicgroup.com\/goldtone\/instruments\/ebm-5\">EBM-5: Electric Banjo<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How heavy is a banjo?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another thing to take into consideration when choosing your first banjo is the weight of the instrument. I\u2019ve been to several jam sessions where folks have talked about how heavy their instrument is and that they wish they had one that was lighter. Lets face it, we all get older and as the years go by sometimes a full weight banjo is a bit much for us to manage. So take this into account when choosing your instrument.
