Learning how to tune your banjo is the first step to discovering your tone!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-heading\">5-String Banjo Tunings<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Open G Tuning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>G, D, G, B, D<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tuning G, D, G, B, D is considered standard for 5 string banjos. The \u201copen\u201d portion of this tuning gets its name because it doesn\u2019t need to be fretted to play the G chord. Most Gold Tone <a href=\"https:\/\/goldtonemusicgroup.com\/goldtone\/products\/banjos?menu_category=5-string-resonator,5-string-open-back&amp;sort=az\">five string banjos<\/a> are set up using this tuning. Most of the following tunings are modified from this standard G tuning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">G Modal Tuning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>G, D, G, C, D<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commonly referred to \u201cSawmill Tuning\u201d this tuning variation raises the second string a half step to C. This is a popular tuning for old time clawhammer playing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Drop C Tuning:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>G, C, G, B, D<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDrop C\u201d or just \u201cC\u201d tuning drops the low D a whole step to C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Double C Tuning:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>G, C, G, C, D<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most commonly used by clawhammer players, \u201cDouble C\u201d tuning lowers the fourth string D to C and raises the second string B a half step to C. This makes the first strings D a suspended 2<sup>nd<\/sup> in the C chord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">D Tuning:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>F#, D, F#, A, D<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commonly associated with Earl Scruggs, \u201cD Tuning\u201d can be configured two ways. More commonly the fifth string will be F# but it can also be tuned to A (A, D, F#, A, D). These two variations are both known as \u201cD Tuning\u201d and are up to the preference of the player.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Achieve this tuning with no modifications using our <a href=\"https:\/\/goldtonemusicgroup.com\/goldtone\/parts\/cheatkey\">Cheat-A-Key D-Tuners<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Long Neck Tuning:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>E, B, E, G#, B<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is simply standard G tuning dropped to the key of E. This tuning comes standard on all Gold Tone <a href=\"https:\/\/goldtonemusicgroup.com\/goldtone\/products\/banjos?menu_category=long-neck&amp;sort=az\">long neck banjos<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A-Scale Tuning:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A, E, A, C#, E<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Standard for \u201cA Scale\u201d banjos like the <a href=\"https:\/\/goldtonemusicgroup.com\/goldtone\/instruments\/cc-ota\">CC-OTA<\/a>. Over the years, Gold Tone has used this tuning on our travel banjos such as our first manufactured banjo; the TB-100. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Baritone Tuning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>C, G, C, E, G<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Made popular by B\u00e9la Fleck and his Gold Tone <a href=\"https:\/\/goldtonemusicgroup.com\/goldtone\/instruments\/ml-1\">ML-1<\/a> banjo, this has become the standard for baritone banjo tuning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-heading\">4-String Tenor Banjo Tunings<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Standard Tenor Tuning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>C, G, D, A<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This tuning is the baseline for almost all <a href=\"https:\/\/goldtonemusicgroup.com\/goldtone\/products\/banjos?menu_category=4-string&amp;sort=az\">four string tenor banjos<\/a>. It is also commonly used on mandolas and violas. Many tenor banjo players consider this tuning to be \u201ctrue\u201d tenor tuning. The <a href=\"https:\/\/goldtonemusicgroup.com\/goldtone\/instruments\/ceb-4\">CEB-4<\/a> Cello Banjo also utilizes this tenor tuning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Irish Tenor Tuning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>G, D, A, E<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All Gold Tone Irish tenor banjos come set up in this tuning. This tuning is also used on many of our mandolins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chicago Tuning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>D, G, B, E<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By using the same pitches as the first four strings of a guitar, this tuning makes it easy for any guitar player to adapt to the banjo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plectrum Tuning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>C, G, B, D<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same pitches as the first four strings of the standard five-string banjo tuning but with the fourth string tuned down to a C. This tuning is one of two standard tunings for plectrum banjos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Banjo Ukulele Tuning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>G, C, E, A<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The standard tuning for <a href=\"https:\/\/goldtonemusicgroup.com\/goldtone\/products\/ukes?menu_category=banjo-ukuleles&amp;sort=az\">banjo-ukuleles<\/a>, it\u2019s used on all Gold Tone banjo ukes. It\u2019s the same as used on any standard ukulele, including our \u201cresonator ukulele\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-heading\">6-String Banjo Tunings<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6-String Tuning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>E, A, D, G, B, E<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look familiar? This banjo tuning is the same tuning as a guitar. Here at Gold Tone, we refer to these instruments as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/goldtonemusicgroup.com\/goldtone\/products\/guitars?menu_category=banjitar&amp;sort=az\">banjitars<\/a>\u201d.
